I’ve seen it tweeted, blogged about, and said over and over in the last few weeks —2019 was a hard year for many of us. Was it the political environment? The alignment of the stars? Something in the water?
For me personally, it was the year that my mental health became something I could no longer manage on my own. It was the year working a stressful day job and building a business made it hard for me to even get out of bed. It was the year my writing slowed to a standstill.
Many things have changed—I’m on depression medication and seeing a therapist, I quit my day job and am focusing on our business, and with the help of a critical writing friend (Michelle Hazen is a goddess) I’ve rebuilt a steady writing practice—and I finally feel like I’m back at the Starting Line of the race, instead of hiding in the locker room.
I feel more ME than I did at any point in the last 12 months, and I’m not about to let this hope, excitement, and energy slip through my fingers.
And so, inspired by Victoria Lee’s annual goal setting blog, I decided to document my own…
2020 Goals
Personal Care:
- Skincare 2x daily
- Be active/workout 4-5x weekly
- Make food choices that *feel* good, not binging junk food or completely denying myself either
- Yoga 1x per week….but 2x would be better!
- Continue working to solve this “chronic fatigue” problem
- Be less precious about my time. Life doesn’t fit into convenient 2-hour blocks, and there’s so much life I’ve passed on because it *might* make me feel rushed or I *might* only have 10 minutes to call that friend on my drive or I *might* feel tired the next day. Make the most of my 2020 minutes and stop hedging.
Business:
- Document a quarterly promotional calendar IN ADVANCE.
- Network with other local gyms & health-related business – Have at least 4 coffee dates/calls
- Put automated &/or simplified processes in place for:
- Event inquiries
- Following up with new leads
- New member engagement
- Member cancellation
- Send Newsletter monthly
- Post on socials 3-4x weekly
- Improve basic photography/videography skills
- Enjoy this crazy journey and the community we’re building
Writing:
- Finish drafting Witchy Blogger Girls
- Revise Witchy Blogger Girls
- Draft at least 1/2 of Dark Library
- Publish a blog 1x per month
- Publish 1-2 blogs/articles on a bigger publication
Social:
- Invite a friend to do something once per month (accepting an invitation doesn’t count!)
- Go on a date with husband at least 1x per month
- Make more of an effort to contact long-distance friends
- Host a dinner party or two
Educational:
- Read 3-4 craft books
- Read 3-4 books on race, gender, social justice, inequality, psychology, etc. to learn more about the world around me
- Take 1 writing course from the community college
30th Birthday!
- Celebrate with the most joy-inducing and playful activity you can think of. Horseback riding? Laser tag? A new tattoo?
- Don’t wait until the last minute to plan. Make sure this is something you will LOVE, a memory to cherish forever.
Basically, channel this energy >>>
And finally, my word of the year à la Susanna Conway is going to be VALUE. I’m going to focus my time and energy on the things that will bring me the most value in terms of relaxation or joy or learning or growing my business or furthering my writing.
I’m looking at you social media…we’re not going to be the best of friends this year.
And to you, reader, I’m wishing the best of luck in this new year and new decade!
